This Saturday at Belmont Park, Kentucky Oaks heroine Untapable will try to cement her status as the top three-year-old filly in the country in the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes. The Grade 1 event has drawn a field of six and will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth.
Tabbed as the overwhelming morning line favorite at 1-5, Untapable is a perfect three-for-three for the year. Along with her triumph in the Kentucky Oaks, she also won the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2 ) and the Rachel Alexandria Stakes (G3) for trainer Steve Asmussen. John Velazquez will be in the irons for the first time and will replace the injured Rosie Napravnik. The sophomore daughter of Tapit will break from post position two for owner and breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Stopchargingmaria is always game for a fight
Second choice at 8-1 is Todd Pletcher’s three-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat, Stopchargingmaria. Javier Castellano will be back aboard and has piloted the dark bay filly to three of her four victories, all of which came against stakes competition. Owned by Repole Stable, Stopchargingmaria was last seen pulling off a game victory in the Black Eyed Susans Stakes (G2) by a neck over a field of ten rivals. She breaks from the outside in the field of six.
Well-bred America looks to be in tough company
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott will send out the impeccably-bred longshot America. Owned by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, the three-year-old daughter of A.P. Indy has been installed at 20-1 morning line odds with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons. Ortiz narrowly escaped serious injury after a spill at Belmont Park on Wednesday but has been released from the hospital and is cleared to resume riding. America has one win to her credit, a maiden victory as a juvenile last fall.
