Bet on The Whitney Stakes

The Whitney Handicap is a Grade I race for three-year-old and up thoroughbreds held every summer at Saratoga Racecourse in Saratoga, New York. Named for the Whitney family, who have been prominent in American horse racing for decades, the Whitney was first held in 1928 and the first winner was in fact a filly, Black Maria. The next year another filly, Bateau, won the race, but only four other fillies have visited the winner’s circle since, the last being Personal Ensign in 1988.

2016 Whitney Stakes Contenders

The 2016 Whitney features a compact, but strong field of six veteran runners led by the ultra-talented Frosted, who looked like a superhorse last out winning the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap by jaw-dropping 14 1/4-lengths July 11 at Belmont Park. If the talented four year-old can reproduce that effort, then the rest of the field might well be running for second.

It’s worth noting, however, that the Met Mile was by far Frosted’s best career race and was over one-turn. Switching back to the two-turn Whitney, handicappers looking for a reason to question whether the gray son of Tapit, may have reason to back other runners such at multiple graded stakes winners Effinex, Upstart and Noble Bird. Noble Bird and Effinex were last-out winners of the Pimlico Special and Suburban Handicap respectively, while Upstart finished a distant-second to Frosted and has reportedly worked well in the interim.

Did you know?

One of the most famous runnings of the Whitney occurred in 1973, when the great Triple Crown winner Secretariat, as the heavy favorite suffered his first defeat in four starts that year, finishing second to a virtual unknown named Onion. Prior to the Whitney, Onion had been running mostly in lower level stakes races, while Secretariat had followed up his Triple Crown run with a win in the Arlington Invitational. But Onion went to the lead from the gate and never gave it up, despite late pressure from Secretariat. After the race, it was discovered that Secretariat ran while suffering a low-grade fever. Onion, meanwhile, didn’t win another stakes race for the rest of his career.
