Bet on The Jockey Club Gold Cup

Second only in prestige to the famous Belmont Stakes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational (originally called the Jockey Club Stakes) is the premier thoroughbred race at Belmont Park’s fall meet. For horses three-years-old and up racing 1 ¼ miles on the Belmont dirt track, the race has been run every year since 1919. In 1920, the race was a showcase for the great Man O’ War who faced only one other runner, Damask, who was essentially entered so that Man O’ War wouldn’t win in a “walk-over.”

Jockey Club Gold Cup Contenders

The Jockey Club Gold Cup is one of the most historic and prestigious races for older horses in the country and the winner will earn an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). While only a compact field of six has come together for this year’s edition, it is a relatively wide open and competitive field.

Effinex has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 7-5 and will try to improve off of a third-place finish in last year’s renewal of this race. Though he has not been the most consistent horse this year, he has had two graded stakes victories and will have to move forward off of an average performance in the Whitney Stakes (G1) in his most recent outing at Saratoga. Mike Smith has retained the mount and they will break from the outside post.

Mubtaahij (IRE) figures to be his main opposition and is the second choice at odds of 8-5 on the morning line. A contender in the Triple Crown last year, he returned stateside after a good runner-up effort in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and has been improving with each start. Kiaran McLaughlin will also saddle Watershed, a longshot at 10-1 odds. The Godolphin Racing homebred is regally bred and will be trying to earn his first graded stakes victory.

Here is the field for the Jockey Club Gold Cup along with morning line odds.

1. Protonico, 12-1

2. Mubtaahij (IRE), 8-5

3. Hoppertunity, 7-2

4. War Story, 30-1

5. Watershed, 10-1

6. Effinex, 7-5

Did you know?

Over the years a nine horses have been multiple Gold Cup winners, although none won it more than twice. That list includes some of the most famous American thoroughbreds in history, such as Slew O’ Gold and Skip Away, as well as more recently Curlin, and in both 2011 and 2012, Flat Out. In 1970-71, Shuvee became the only female horse to win the race twice. One of the more memorable runnings of the race happened in 1978, when Exceller defeated a field that included both of the last two US Triple Crown winners in Seattle Slew and Affirmed.
