Bet on the Belmont Derby Invitational

The inaugural Belmont Derby Invitational ran on July 5th, 2014, taking over the tradition of the Jamaica Handicap in the 65th running of the event. This race takes place at the Belmont Park racetrack, gathering some of the finest three-year-old thoroughbreds in the world for a 1 1/4 mile race on the inner track turf.

2016 Belmont Derby Contenders

The field is set for the 2016 edition of the Belmont Derby Invitational and a wide open field of thirteen colts and geldings has assembled for the prestigious event.

Trainer Aiden O’Brien has a loaded hand in the race with both the morning line favorite and the second choice. Long Island Sound, an $800,000 purchase, is the 7-2 favorite and will be making his first start in America. He won the first three races of his career and was third against Group 3 company last time out at Royal Ascot. Stablemate was a Group 3 winner as a juvenile and since that victory has struggled to recapture top form. He is coming out of an eleventh-place finish in the Investec Derby (G1).

They will face some serious competition from the domestic contenders including Camelot Kitten, one of three entrants for trainer Chad Brown. The son of Kitten’s Joy has improved with every start this year and comes into this race off of two consecutive graded stakes victories.

Did you know?

The first winner of the Belmont Derby Invitational was Mr. Speaker, who was a huge longshot at 23-1 odds. Despite fading earlier in the season in a shorter turf race, Mr. Speaker remained strong to take out the heavily-favored Adelaide, an Irish thoroughbred who went off at 2-1 odds. The Jamaica Handicap, which sired the Belmont Derby Invitational, was established in 1928, named after the Jamaica District in Queens and raced at the Jamaica Racetrack until the facilities shut down in 1959. Incredibly, two horses are three-time winners of this race, with Overdrawn finishing first from 1941-1943 and Piet winning from 1949-1951.
