Top Three Year-Old Fillies Square Off in Silverbulletday
A popular launching point for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in May, the $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes for three year-old fillies features eight runners set to contest the mile and one sixteenth event January 16 at Fair Grounds amid a stakes-heavy card.
The precocious Stage Play is the 8/5 morning line favorite for trainer Steve Asmussen, who has excelled with sophomore fillies throughout his training career. Stage Play opened her career with two impressive wins, including an aesthetically pleasing score in the Rags to Riches Stakes before closing her juvenile campaign with a second-place effort in the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Curlin will break from post eight with jockey Florent Geroux in the irons and is strictly the one to deny.
Lovable Lyss steps up
Lovable Lyss (4/1) makes her stakes debut after winning two of three starts in 2015. The Hugh Robertson trained and owned filly finished second in her debut at Arlington Park before reeling off consecutive victories at Fair Grounds. A daughter of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown out of a Stephen Got Even mare, Lovable Lyss has plenty of license to improve with experience and more distance. Francisco Torres will be aboard, breaking from post 4.
Delta Princess winner back for more
Jet Black Magic (5/1) won the Grade 3 Delta Princess to close her juvenile campaign for trainer William Brett Calhoun, and has hit the board in all four career starts. The improving Louisiana-bred daughter of Hold Me Back may have to take another step forward to compete with the top two.
