Royal Ascot: Kyprios leads a strong Gold Cup field
Royal Ascot is one of the greatest race meets in the world, and there is no race as historic or exciting during the meet than the Gold Cup (G1)! First run in 1807, it is one of the premier races for stayers in the world. The two-and-a-half-mile turf race offers a rich £500,000 purse, and it drew ten of the world’s best long-distance horses.
Stradivarius has already won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot three times, and he will try to join Yeats as a four-time winner of the race. However, it will be no easy quest. He will face Kyprios, a rising star for Gold Cup dominant trainer Aidan O’Brien, as well as other in-form horses like Sagaro Stakes winner Princess Zoe.
The Gold Cup is one of the great betting races of Royal Ascot. Keep reading to learn about the top contenders, and to find out the best places to bet the race online in New York!

These are the most important contenders for the 2022 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, including both the best horses near the top of the market as well as horses to play each-way or in exotics for a price:
Royal Ascot Gold Cup Top Contenders
Stradivarius has been the name on everyone’s mind in the Gold Cup since his first win in 2018. At eight years old, he tries to avenge his fourth-place finish last year and win it for the fourth time. He may not be as good as he was once, though he does come into the race on a victory and he is able to handle good-to-firm course conditions better than some of his foes, making him a contender.
Kyprios is the rising star and the likely favorite. Though he has never gone two and a half miles before, his trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the race seven times and has a great mind for who will stay the Gold Cup trip. He is by the right sire, Galileo, and his full brother Search for a Song is a G3 winner going two miles. This pedigree and these connections are a recipe for success.
One of the entered horses, Trueshan, is unlikely to start in the Gold Cup. Though he carries extremely strong form into the race, he prefers rain-affected going and his trainer has suggested that he will not run if the footing is the good-to-firm turf that is expected.
Royal Ascot Gold Cup Price Horses
Princess Zoe struggled late last year into early 2022, but a two-month break seemed to do her good. She returned in the two-mile Sagaro Stakes (G3) April 27, the traditional local prep for the Gold Cup, and stayed on gamely to win by a head. She will have to improve against this better field second off the layoff, but she ran second in the Gold Cup last year after a less impressive final prep and she is a French G1 winner at two and a half miles.
Tashkhan has yet to win against horses of this quality, but he regularly finds underneath shares against the same horses he will see in the Gold Cup. Though he has never gone this long, his ability to be competitive at 16 and 17 furlongs bodes well for this try going 20. He also ran a credible third to Stradivarius over good going at York last out, meaning he may have a bit more affinity for better ground than some of the other wet-track types here.
