For Kentucky Derby prospects, look no further than Remington Park on Friday, December 17, 2021! The day’s card features the Remington Springboard Mile, where a field of nine promising juveniles will compete for a rich $400,000 purse and Road to the Kentucky Derby points (10-4-2-1) for the top four finishers.
This race has been contested since 2001, and took its current name in 2009, suggesting it as a “springboard” to the Kentucky Derby Trail. Though no Springboard Mile winner has taken the roses yet, 2013 Travers Stakes winner and three-year-old champion Will Take Charge contested it in 2012, finishing second to 128-1 longshot Texas Bling.
Read on to find out who might parlay a Springboard win into three-year-old glory this year!

Now that you know how to find the best places to play the race, let’s get to know the best horses in the 2021 Remington Springboard Mile.
Remington Springboard Mile Favorites
Trainer Steve Asmussen has won six editions of the Remington Springboard Mile, including two of the last three, and has the likely chalk in #5 Classic Moment. He steps up to face winners for the first time, but with his previous form at Churchill, he has been facing good foes. His pedigree looks good for the step up to a mile, and Stewart Elliott takes the call.
The jockey assignment is interesting especially since Elliott previously rode #1 Concept, Asmussen’s other runner. Concept is mired on the inside, and will probably be forced to send from the beginning of the race. Concept is already a stakes winner over the course, but that came at one turn. Now he has to try more distance, and may not get a great trip.
The Intriguing Horses
#9 Osbourne has the right skills to threaten the Asmussen chalk. The Ron Moquett trainee has tactical speed from the outside, which should help him get a nice trip. He should be fit second off the lay, and even though he stretches out for the first time, his pedigree is appealing and his jockey Julien Leparoux sees fit to ship out and ride.
#3 Bye Bye Bobby looks the most likely beneficiary if some of the speed horses lock-up and go too fast early. He is trained by Todd Fincher, who won this race last year. And, even though he has only raced once, that debut was a winning one — in a stakes, where he faced winners. He has the pedigree to improve with this extra distance, as well.
Avoid This Underlay
#2 Make it Big will take money, especially with Jose Ortiz shipping out to ride. However, there are reasons to be wary. He has some gaudy speed numbers, but they came at Gulfstream, a track whose form does not always translate elsewhere. Furthermore, those previous races came against Florida-breds, and now he has to face open company for the first time.
Interesting Longshots
Though #6 Rowdy Rascal faces open company for the first time since before he broke his maiden, he should at least be a long enough price to remain interesting. He has really woken up since moving to Remington, and last time he looked as good as ever when winning a one-mile race over the Remington dirt. His pace versatility also helps his case.
#7 Rich Strike’s only win came against maiden claimers, though he showed next out in an allowance at Keeneland that he is a better horse than that. Though he only finished third, he overcame some real trouble to do so. If the front-running horses go a little too fast early, watch out for Rich Strike late.
