Private Zone Takes on Five in $300,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the featured race is the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap. Scheduled to be run at one mile on the main track, the Grade 2 has drawn a compact but quality field of six contenders.
Private Zone has been listed as the morning line favorite at odds of 6-5 and will be making his first start for trainer Jorge Navarro. A six-year-old gelded son of Macho Uno, he has won seven times over the course of his career and is a multiple Grade 1 winner. He was last seen winning the Cigar Mile (G1) in November at Aqueduct in front-running fashion and has been training sharply since then. Regular rider Martin Pedroza will be aboard from post position five.
Wicked Strong ready to kick off four-year-old season
Second choice at 5-2 on the morning line is Wicked Strong for trainer James Jerkens. He has won three of his eleven starts and has been sidelined since clipping heels and losing his rider in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) in September. He has been training forwardly for his return to the races and will be reunited with jockey Rajiv Maragh who recently returned to action after getting injured in his fall in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). They will break from post two.
Highly-regarded Honor Code back against stakes company
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Honor Code for trainer Claude McGaughey, III. A four-year-old son of A.P. Indy, he has won three of his five starts and returned off of an eight-month layoff successfully in November with a win as the favorite against optional claiming competition at Aqueduct. He has had a recent bullet workout in preparation for his return to graded stakes competition and will have regular rider Javier Castellano aboard from the rail.
