Lord North, who won this race in 2020, will try to become only the fourth horse to win the Prince of Wales’s twice. Despite his proven success, he will have a tough task ahead of him. Even though it is just a field of five, those horses include Bay Bridge, winner of his last five starts, and Shahryar, the last-out winner of the Sheema Classic (G1) at Meydan.

Prince of Wales's Handicapping

These are the key horses to include in your wagers on the 2022 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Prince of Wales's Contenders

Bay Bridge will go off the favorite in the Prince of Wales’s, but this rising star deserves it. It is true that he has to prove his class in this, his first attempt in Group 1 company. However, he keeps passing every test with flying colors. And, perhaps more importantly, this four-year-old has a pace advantage.

No one in the field is the type who typically likes to bound to the lead. However, Bay Bridge typically sits in range of the early going, and has even vied for the lead before. That kind of pace could get him an extremely cozy lead in the Prince of Wales’s, and he should have plenty left to kick away when the real running begins late.

His most serious opposition comes in the form of Shahryar. Last year’s Japanese Derby winner, he proved he could ship overseas when winning the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) in March at Meydan. He is unlikely to get the lead over Bay Bridge, but should not have to drop too far back and should find the good, good-to-firm ground to his liking.

Prince of Wales's Longshots

It would be a lot easier to be bullish about a longshot in this race if any of them were truly speed horses. In that case, you could take a shot with one to try and steal the race on the front end. However, choosing a longshot is a question of which one might try to be a bit more tactical, and perhaps who can handle the course.

That leads to Lord North as the most interesting price horse in the field. He won this race two years ago, proving an ability over course and distance. He could move up from his close fourth-place finish last out in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1) at the Curragh, and it was interesting that he tried a more tactical style in that race last out. A reprise could get him a piece in this.

State of Rest, already a G1 winner in both the United States and Australia, also comes out of the Tattersalls Gold Cup. He tried to sit a bit closer to the pace in that race, but settled back and then came rallying late for third. His better style is typically further off the pace. The ground should suit, but given pace concerns, others appeal more this time around.

Grand Glory has been keeping quality company in France, but several factors weigh against her here. Her strongest form comes over rain-affected going, not the better ground she will get at Royal Ascot. And, she may be the most pace-compromised in the field.

Prince of Wales's Bets

Now that you have made your online betting account and met the field, all that’s left to do is the fun part: make your wagers! Here are the best bets for the 2022 Prince of Wales's:

  • $20 to win - #1 Bay Bridge

  • $10 each way - #2 Lord North

  • $1 exacta key -  #1 Bay Bridge with #3 Shahriyar and #2 Lord North
