2020 Preakness Analysis
Favored Authentic, the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner, drew post nine for the 1 3/16 mile Preakness. The son of Into Mischief won the Kentucky Derby (G1) after taking the Haskell (G1) and the San Felipe (G2) earlier in the year. John Velazquez will ride the Derby winner for Bob Baffert, who has won seven Preakness Stakes and seeks to outright own the record for most won.
The filly Swiss Skydiver will attempt to become the first filly to win the race since Rachel Alexandra in 2009. Several fillies have won this race, but typically this happened in olden times and would be quite the feat today. Swiss Skydiver won major races at Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, Saratoga, and Oaklawn Park before finishing second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) behind surprise winner Shedaresthedevil. Ken McPeek trains.
Art Collector is riding a winning streak including the Ellis Park Derby and is unbeaten on the year. He is a son of 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini and is trained by Tom Drury. Brian Hernandez, Jr will ride the bay colt, who has crossed the wire first or second in seven of nine starts.
Max Player is a son of Honor Code, out of a Not For Love mare. That same broodmare sire is responsible for 2014 Preakness Stakes winner California Chrome. Steve Asmussen took over his training before the Derby, where he finished fifth. He is Grade 1 placed on the year.
Jesus' Team is a big longshot but looks phenomenal training this year. The son of Tapiture has been top three in seven of 10-lifetime starts and is coming off a near-miss in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy. She was second in the Pegasus Stakes and fourth in the Haskell. When he wins, he does so by open lengths. Jose D'Angelo trains.
Handicapping the Preakness Stakes
Authentic should break well and never look back. The two-time Grade 1 winner has been conditioned to his prime by trainer Bob Baffert and is bidding to steal Eclipse Champion Three Year Old honors away from Tiz the Law. With hundreds of micro shareowners involved on top of his form, Authentic figures to be a severely low priced favorite, but is deserving of that role.
Attempting to beat him will be Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) winner Art Collector and the Grade 1 winning filly Swiss Skydiver. Although longshots rarely win the Preakness, there are several that could sneak into the exacta and trifecta, such as Mr. Big News, Ny Traffic, and Jesus' Team.

Expert Preakness Picks
Keep reading for free picks for the 2020 Preakness Stakes. It is one of the best races of the year!
$100 Win on Authentic. Authentic should win. He can either go to the lead or sit right off the pace and should draw away in the lane. This is the best horse on paper that will be hard to match.
$20 Place/Show Max Player. One of three Steve Asmussen trainees in the race, Max Player has been knocking on the door for a big win all year. His overall record is quite good and the cut back in distance should help the late-running son of Honor Code.
- $5 Exacta Box Authentic and Swiss Skydiver
- $1 Trifecta Box Authentic, Swiss Skydiver, Max Player
- $5 to Win Mr. Big News, Jesus' Team. This is a safer bet in case there is a rare Preakness upset.
2020 Preakness Undercard Picks
There are 10 other stakes races on the Preakness undercard, as well as four other stakes at Pimlico on Thursday and Friday. Owendale is the top play in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on October 2. Other plays for the October 3 undercard are Factor This in the $250,000 Dinner Party Stakes (G2), and Bonny South in the $250,000 Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) for sophomore fillies.
