On Sunday at Santa Anita, the track will host the $75,000 San Pedro Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the six furlong contest has drawn a field of seven colts and geldings.
Denman’s Call has been installed as the morning line favorite in the contentious field at odds of 2-1 for trainer Doug O’Neill. A chestnut son of Northern Afleet, the gelding will be trying to earn his first stakes victory and second win of his career. He broke his maiden in his debut and followed that up with a third-place finish in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) where he finished behind his Eclipse Award winning stablemate Nyquist. Flavien Prat will be aboard and they will break from post position five.
Toews on Ice trying to return to form
Second choice at morning line odds of 5-2 is Toews on Ice, one of two horses in the race for trainer Bob Baffert. A dark bay son of Archarcharch, he has been on the board in six of his seven starts and has three victories included one against graded stakes company. He will be trying to rebound after finishing sixth in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park last time out. Victor Espinoza will be aboard and they will break from post position six.
Stakes debut for Boldly True after allowance win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Boldly True for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A dark bay son of Yes It’s True, he will be stepping up to stakes competition for the first time and has two wins from three starts. After a fourth-place finish in his debut, he broke his maiden in his second outing and followed that up with a victory against optional claiming competition. Drayden Van Dyke will be in the irons and they will break from post four.
