Life Is Good Leads Pegasus World Cup

Life Is Good Leads Pegasus World Cup

Category : News - Fri 28/01/2022 - 06:31 EST

The best horses in the older dirt male division line up for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup on Saturday, January 29 at Gulfstream Park! The race is at a mile and an eighth on the main track, an intermediate distance that draws both Classic runners and milers alike. Nine horses have passed the entry box, and are ready for a thrilling renewal of the winter’s biggest race!

The Pegasus World Cup was first run in 2017. It takes its name from the breathtaking 100-foot-tall Pegasus and Dragon statue that overlooks Gulfstream Park, a statue that demanded a race as big as it is! Greats like Arrogate and Gun Runner have won the race in the past, and this year Knicks Go tries to become its first-ever two-time winner!

Can he pull the repeat? Read on to find out!

Pegasus World Cup Favorites

Well-bet horses typically win the Pegasus World Cup. All five of its winners have either been the favorite or the second choice in the betting. In the 2022 Pegasus, there are two runners who stand to get the lion’s share of the betting action: defending Pegasus champion #1 Knicks Go and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner #4 Life Is Good.

Based on his Pegasus performance last year, we know Knicks Go can get nine furlongs and can handle the Gulfstream footing. However, it is feast or famine with this grey: he either clears and coasts home easily, or he is forced to work too hard early and he weakens off the board. If there is a horse who has top-echelon sprinter/miler speed, Knicks Go may be in trouble.

There is such a horse: Life Is Good. He has the speed to go gate to wire in sprints, but the stamina to carry it two turns and the pedigree to make a mile and an eighth a realistic task. He also drew better than Knicks Go, a few stalls outside the rail-drawn chalk. This all adds up to a good chance for stalwart New York trainer Todd Pletcher to win his first-ever Pegasus World Cup with Life Is Good.

Intriguing Pegasus Price Horses

Though favorites tend to win the Pegasus World Cup, longshots often find their way into exactas and trifectas.  Every year at least one horse has found the trifecta at odds of 10/1 or bigger, and some years longshots finish both second and third. Furthermore, some horses at north of 30/1 have been able to reach second or third place in the Pegasus! Playing intra-race exotics with longshots is a great way to make money playing this race.

#8 Endorsed is a proven Gulfstream Park horse; he has raced over the track four times and never finished worse than a third. Though all of his recent efforts have come at one turn, he has hit the board in a pair of nine-furlong stakes races at Saratoga. He has the speed to get close to the leaders early, and the stamina to keep going for a share of the exotics.

#3 Stilleto Boy may have been a longshot when he won the Iowa Derby last summer, but he has turned in some quality efforts against top horses. He hit the board in a pair of G1 races at Santa Anita last year, including the Awesome Again (G1), which covers a mile and an eighth. With tactical speed and a proven record handling different racetracks, Stilleto Boy should show another good effort.

#5 Empty Tomb could also stick around for a piece underneath in the Pegasus. Though he has yet to win a mile and an eighth race, he has a strong track record of finding exactas and trifectas: in seven tries at the trip, he has been either second or third five times. With aggressive, high-percentage rider Paco Lopez riding, Empty Tomb should be able to display his tactical speed, and can hit the board if he holds his recent form.
