On Saturday at Santa Anita, the featured race is the 41st edition of the $200,000 La Canada Stakes. Restricted to four-year-old fillies, the Grade 2 contest is run at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track and has drawn a field of nine.
Lexie Lou, the winner of the Queen’s Plate against male rivals in July, has been installed as the morning line favorite at 6-5 for trainer Mark Casse. The four-year-old filly has won on turf and synthetics and will be making her first try on conventional dirt. She was last seen finishing second to Kentucky Derby (G1) winner California Chrome in the Hollywood Derby (G1) on the turf. Corey Nakatani will remain aboard and they are scheduled to break from post position three.
Sam's Sister going for two stakes wins in a row
Jerry Hollendorfer has three starters in the race led by the second choice on the morning line, Sam’s Sister, at 2-1 odds. A chestnut daughter of Brother Derek, she has won four of her five career starts and made her stakes debut a winning one last time out in the La Brea (G1). She has had a bullet workout since that effort and will break from post position two under regular jockey Elvis Trujillo.
Jojo Warrior trying to return to form
Also in the field at morning line odds of 4-1 is Jojo Warrior for trainer Bob Baffert. A bay daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, she is trying to rebound after finishing eighth in the La Brea (G1). Prior to that, she had three total career victories, two of which came against graded stakes company. She has been training sharply since that race and will have Martin Garcia aboard from post position five.
