Kentucky Derby Handicapping
New York-based Tiz the Law is the winner of the Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes, all Grade 1 events this year. He was also a New York Grade 1 winner as a juvenile. He is trained by Barclay Tagg, who campaigned 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide.
Second to Tiz the Law in the Travers was lightly raced Caracaro. He missed by a neck in the Peter Pan at Saratoga, and his sire Uncle Mo is one of the best in the business.
Ny Traffic is a longshot that everyone is excited about. The son of Cross Traffic was beaten just a nose in the rich TVG Haskell (G1) by leading Derby contender Authentic. He was also second in Churchill's prep race, the Matt Winn, so he handles the track. He won an allowance by seven lengths in Florida over the winter and has hit the board in all of his prep races.
Kentucky Derby Pick 6
There are 13 stakes races Kentucky Derby week, starting on Thursday, September 3, and going through the races at Churchill Downs on September 5. The Kentucky Derby Pick 6 will include rich stakes races: the $500,000 American Turf, the $500,000 Derby City Distaff, the $500,000 Pat Day Mile, the $500,000 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, and the $1 million Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic leading up to the Kentucky Derby itself.
There will be a special Kentucky Oaks Day/Kentucky Derby Day Pick 6 that has a $2 minimum wager and is separate from the regular Pick 6 of both of those days. The regular Pick 6 has a minimum bet of 20 cents.
Post positions for the 146th Kentucky Derby will be chosen on September 2. The race will run about 6 pm Eastern time on September 5.
Expert Kentucky Derby Predictions
The 2020 Kentucky Derby looks like it runs through New York-bred Tiz the Law. The son of Constitution has been the best horse of the year so far. Following Tiz the Law could be horses like Honor A. P., Authentic, Art Collector, and Thousand Words, but the last time the Kentucky Derby had a favorite this imposing, that horse was Arazi in 1992 and he did not hit the board. That's why it is important to be aware of several Kentucky Derby longshots.
Kentucky Derby Longshot Picks
Here are a few longshots to consider when betting the Kentucky Derby. You can play $2 or $5 to show on all of them and hope that they hit the board at a price. These are also the horses worth using in your exotic wagers such as the superfecta.
Storm the Court was the upset winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita. He is the type of horse who always puts in an honest run, whether or not that is enough to win. Peter Eurton trains the son of Court Vision, who was second on the turf at Del Mar in August. He has been running behind horses like Honor A. P. and Authentic.
Major Fed is a homebred son of Ghostzapper for trainer Greg Foley. He was second in the Grade 2 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds earlier this year, then ran second in the Indiana Derby (G3) last out. The only knock against him is that he ran tenth in his Churchill Downs start in May, and would need to improve to be effective here.
Attachment Rate was announced as official into the Kentucky Derby following the approval of trainer Dale Romans. The son of Hard Spun, who was second in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, was second in the Ellis Park Derby last out. He has yet to win a major race but has finished top three in five of seven starts this year, and Romans is a leading trainer at Churchill.
Max Player moved into the barn of Steve Asmussen, who seeks his first Kentucky Derby win. The son of Honor Code was trained by Linda Rice until a month ago. He ran third in both the Travers (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), and was a big winner in Grade 3 company at Aqueduct in February. His dam sire, Not for Love, is also the dam sire on Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome.
