In this piece, we will have a look at the 2019 Futurity Stakes odds and at the 2019 Futurity Stakes picks. Remember that you should claim your bonuses before placing your wagers.

Contested since 1888, Belmont’s Futurity Stakes is a Grade 3 stakes event, a six-furlong thoroughbred race open to two year olds.

The 2019 edition of the race is slated for October 6th at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. In 2018, for the first time in its history, the race was contested on a turf course.

It marked the debut of the Futurity Stakes as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The race is a “win and you’re in” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Legends Of Horse Racing Have Contested Belmont’s Futurity Stakes

A list of winners of the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park reads like a who’s-who of horse racing royalty. Man O’War won the race in 1919. Citation in 1947 was the first winner of the race who would go on to win the Triple Crown as a three year old.

Secretariat (1972) and Affirmed (1977) were also Futurity States winners as a prelude to Triple Crown triumphs the following year.

Affirmed set a stakes record of 1:21.60 in his victory, which at the time came when the race was contested over seven furlongs.

Blofeld, the 2014 winner, established the Futurity Stakes mark for six furlongs of 1:09.49. Naturally, Uncle Benny’s 2018 winning time of 1:11.26 was also a stakes record, since this was the first year the race was contested on a turf course.

Lemon Drop Kid (2000 Belmont Stakes), Swale (1984 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes), Riva Ridge (1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes), High Echelon (1970 Belmont Stakes), Bold Ruler (1957 Preakness Stakes), Native Dancer (1953 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes), Pavot (1945 Belmont Stakes), and Bimelech (1940 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes), were other winners of Triple Crown races who won the Futurity Stakes at two.

Whirlaway, the 1941 Triple Crown winner, was beaten by Our Boots in the 1940 Futurity Stakes.

2019 Futurity Stakes Field

The $150,000 Futurity Stakes is the seventh race on Belmont Park’s October 6th card, with a scheduled post time of 4:12 p.m. EST.

Let’s look at this year’s field and the Futurity Stakes odds.

Another Miracle

The most experienced horse in the race, Another Miracle has three starts under his belt during his rookie season. In his most recent start, he captured the Skidmore at Saratoga Race Course on August 16th, a five-and-a-half furlong race over a turf surface.

Sired by 2016 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Another Miracle will have regular rider Manny Franco up for trainer Gary Contessa. He was a $210,000 purchase at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by owners Leonard and Jonathan Green.

The compact, powerful bay colt will score from post position No. 5. Another Miracle is 2-1-0 in three starts, with earnings of $120,500.

Tomato Bill

A $500,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale by owners George Bolton, Three Chimneys Farm, Barry Lipman, Lady Sheila Stable and David Lipman, Tomato Bill is 1-1-0 in two starts with a bankroll of $50,400.

He broke his maiden on May 22 at Delaware Park. In his stakes debut, Tomato Bill was the pacesetter in the Sanford, also a six-furlong race, before giving way late to eventual winner By Your Side and settling for place money.

Tomato Bill drew post position No. 2 for jockey Kendrick Carmouche and trainer Christophe Clement.

If experience in handlers matters, then Freewheeler, the only New York-bred horse in the race, should be freewheeling. He’ll have Belmont icon and five-time winner of this race John Velazquez in the saddle.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has sent out four winners of the Futurity Stakes, including three of the last seven horses to visit the winner’s circle. He’s teamed up with Velazquez to win the race three times, most recently in 2014.

Owners NK Racing purchased Freewheeler at the Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-olds In Training sale for $430,000. With earnings of $42,900, Freewheeler won his only career start August 30th at Saratoga, scoring by 5 ¾ lengths over a 5 ½ furling turf course. Freewheeler starts on the rail.

Four Wheel Drive

Irad Ortiz Jr., who guided Uncle Benny to victory in last year’s Futurity Stakes, will be looking to share a piece of history with Ron Turcotte. Turcotte was last jockey to win back-to-back Futurity Stakes, with Riva Ridge (1971) and Secretariat (1972).

Like Another Miracle, Four Wheel Drive was sired by American Pharoah. The colt was a $525,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. He won his only start August 31st at Colonial Turf by 3 ¼ lengths, earning $60,000. Four Wheel Drive pulled the four hole.

Jack And Noah

The French-bred colt drew the outside No. 6 post. He earned $41,250 for winning his only start, a 1 ¼ length victory September 27th over the Belmont turf course. Jose Lezcano is up for trainer Mark Casse.

The grey will have Joel Rosario up and score from the three hole. He’s 2-1-0 in three starts, banking $99,000. Both of those victories came at home for the Virginia-bred colt.

Embolden broke his maiden over five furlongs on turf August 8th at Colonial Downs. He followed up with a win in the 5 ½ furlong Jamestown, racing against fellow Virginia-breds.

2019 Futurity Stakes Picks

We would go with Another Miracle to win the race.

For the Trifecta, it would be Another Miracle / Freewheeler / Embolden.
