On Saturday at Fair Grounds, the track will host the $75,000 Woodchopper Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the stakes race is carded at about one mile on the turf and has drawn a full field of fourteen colts and geldings with one additional listed as an also-eligible.
Wireless Future has been tabbed as the favorite in the wide open affair as the morning line favorite at odds of 7-2 for trainer Tom Amoss. A dark bay son of the recently deceased stallion Scat Daddy, he has been on the board in six of his ten starts and is a three-time winner. He will be trying to earn the first stakes win of his career and is stepping back up after finishing third in an optional claiming race. Colby Hernandez will be aboard and they will break from post four.
Chip Leader shooting for first stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 4-1 is Chip Leader for owner and trainer Louie Roussel, III. A gelded son of Giant’s Causeway, he was purchased for $180,000 as a weanling and has won three of his ten starts. He has been on the board in five of his six efforts this year and is trying for his first black type victory. He was second in an optional claiming race last time out and will break from the rail under jockey Richard Eramia.
Granny's Kitten trying to improve off recent form
Also in the race at morning line odds of 10-1 is Granny’s Kitten, one of two horses in the race for trainer Michael Maker. A bay son of Kitten’s Joy owned and bred by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, he has won two of his eight starts and is trying to improve off of a pair of off the board finishes against graded stakes competition. He was fourth last time out in the Commonwealth Turf Stakes (G3) and will have Robby Albarado aboard from post nine.
