Full Field Lines Up for $100,000 Dania Beach
The $100,000 Dania Beach for three year-old colts kicks off an all-stakes pick four January 3 at Gulfstream Park, as a field of ten is set to contest the seven and a half furlong event on turf.
Smokem Kitten is the 3/1 morning line favorite after trouncing maiden special weight foes by five and a half lengths in his debut. The Michael Maker trained colt made an easy lead in that race, but had to overcome breaking from post 12 in a 13 horse field. A son of turf champion Kitten’s Joy out of an Unbridled Song mare, Smokem Kitten is a homebred for leading Kentucky owner Ken Ramsey. Smokem Kitten will break from post six under jockey Edgar Prado who was also aboard for the debut.
Another Kitten could be main rival
Smokem Kitten could face a pace challenge from another son of Kitten’s Joy breaking to his immediate inside in 7/2 second choice Wayward Kitten. Trained by Wesley Ward, Wayward Kitten has won one of three starts with two close second place finishes, and was gelded since his last start. In addition, Wayward Kitten will race with blinkers off for the first time – a 14% move for Ward. Ramon Hernandez has the mount on Wayward Kitten breaking from post number five.
Pulpit pair back for more
Croninthebarbarian (6/1) and Night Prowler (4/1) both exit the Pulpit Stakes November 29 at Gulfstream West where they finished second and third respectively. Expect Night Prowler to be closer to the pace this time around, while Croninthebarbarian will be closing ground late.
