Coco's Wildcat Tops Field for $100,000 Sandpiper Stakes
On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, the featured race is the 36th running of the $100,000 Sandpiper Stakes. Restricted to two-year-old fillies, the six-furlong race has drawn a field of eleven.
Headlining the field at 3-1 on the morning line is Coco’s Wildcat, a homebred for owner Gilbert Campbell. A bay daughter of Wildcat Heir trained by Kathleen O’Connell, she has won two of her five starts including the Cassidy Stakes at Gulfstream Park. She is trying to rebound after finishing eleventh and last in the Juvenile Filly Sprint at Gulfstream Park West in November. Luis Garcia, aboard for a third-place finish two back, will be back in the irons from post four.
R Sassy Lass going for two in a row after maiden win
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is R Sassy Lass for trainer Kirk Ziadie. Purchased for $40,000, the dark bay daughter of Exclusive Quality broke her maiden last time out against $100,000 claiming competition at Gulfstream Park in a dominant performance as the favorite. Prior to that, she was third against maiden company and eighth in in a stakes race. Antonio Gallardo has picked up the mount and they will break from post position nine.
Fond of Sarah training sharply since maiden score
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Fond of Sarah. Bred, owned and trained by Charles Assimakopoulos, the bay daughter of With Distinction is out of the winning mare Fondant who also carried the blue and white silks of Yasou Stable Trust. She will be making her first start since breaking her maiden as the favorite at Suffolk Downs in September over eight rivals. Since then, she has been training forwardly and will have Daniel Centeno aboard from post eight.
