Belmont Derby Handicapping
Belmont Derby Best Bet
Michael McCarthy is one of the craftiest trainers in the game, so when he ships a developing horse clear across the country in a spot where he can get a good trip, take notice. And, this is the case with Wizard of Westwood.
Though Wizard of Westwood makes his graded debut in the Belmont Derby, he is already a stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles last out in the Cinema, so he has the stamina. He shapes as the speed of the speed, and if he takes a step forward with that race underneath him, he has a good chance to steal the race on the front end and pay his backers a hefty sum.
Belmont Derby Favorites
Kalik won the local prep, the Pennine Ridge (G2), so he has proven he can handle the Belmont course. Though he does not appear to be as fast early as Wizard of Westwood, his maiden race shows that he can win a race from a stalking spot, giving him a chance to carve out a good trip in this race. Though the Belmont Derby is one of the few major American turf prizes that Chad Brown has yet to claim, he has a legitimate chance with Kalik this year.
The Foxes brings real European class to the Belmont Derby. Though he was only fifth last out, that last race was the Derby (G1) at Epsom: a race in which the top two finishers, Auguste Rodin and King of Steel, have come back to win major prizes. Though The Foxes’ late-running style may prove a liability, the cutback to 1 ¼ miles puts him at a perfect distance, and he should be in the frame down the lane.
Belmont Derby Exotics Horses
Webslinger seized a spot among the better American turf horses on the Kentucky Derby undercard when he won the American Turf (G2). He won his next start as well, in the Audubon. Though that was a class drop, Webslinger showed an important ability in that race: a slow pace forced him to ditch his closing style for a closer-up one, and he still won with confidence. That bodes well for Webslinger to work a nice trip in the Belmont Derby.
Silver Knott comes out for Charlie Appleby, who always gets bet enthusiastically when he enters a horse in the Belmont Derby (or any major American turf race). He spent most of his career in Europe, though he has run twice stateside, including finishing third by a length behind Kalik in the Pennine Ridge. He will be an underlay on top, but his consistency means that he should be able to run on late for a piece of the exotics once again.
