Bellarmine Tops Field for $75,000 Borgata Stakes
On Saturday at Delta Downs, the featured race is the $75,000 Borgata Stakes. Scheduled to be run at one mile, the race has drawn a field of eight colts and geldings.
Headlining the field as the morning line favorite at 9-5 is Bellarmine for trainer Tom Amoss. A five-year-old son of Magna Graduate, he is a six-time career winner and is attempting to earn the first stakes victory of his career. He was last seen winning an optional claiming race at Delta Downs and was third in the Fremont Stakes in his first start of the year. Gerard Melancon will be aboard and they will break from post position five.
School Spirit aiming for first stakes victory
School Spirit has been tabbed as the second choice at morning line odds of 2-1 for trainer Keith Bourgeois. A six-year-old gelded son of Pulpit, he has won nine races over the course of his career and has won three of his last four starts. He made his first try against stakes company last time out and finished second in the Fremont Stakes at Delta Downs. Joseph Patin, Jr. will be in the irons and they will break from post position six.
Ide Be Cool trying for first win of the year
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Ide Be Cool, a four-year-old gelded son of Ide owned and trained by Henry Dunn. The Louisiana-bred is a multiple stakes winner and has won a total of seven of his twelve starts. He has been second in both starts this year and was last seen competing against optional claiming competition. Diego Saenz has the mount and they will break from the outside post as he goes for his first win of the year.
