Multiple champion Beholder will return to action in the $300,000 Zenyatta Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. The Grade 1 race will be run at a mile and a sixteenth and the winner will automatically earn a spot in the field for the Breeders Cup Distaff.
Beholder, the 1-2 morning line favorite, will face five rivals as she attempts to come back after suffering an injury while finishing fourth in the Phipps (G1) last time out. Trained by Richard Mandella, the four-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2012 and triumphed in the Distaff in 2013. She has won seven of her eight starts at Santa Anita and is going for her second win of the year. Mike Smith will be aboard replacing the sidelined Gary Stevens.
Iotapa going for third straight Grade 1
Second choice at 2-1 on the morning line is Iotapa for trainer John Sadler. The four-year-old daughter of Afleet Alex is going for her third consecutive victory and has won a pair of Grade 1 races this year, the Vanity (G1) and the Clement Hirsch (G1). Since her last victory at Del Mar, she has been training sharply at Santa Anita and will have regular rider Joe Talamo aboard. Iotapa is slated to break from post position two as she goes for her seventh career win.
Tiz Midnight takes on graded stakes company
Also in the field is Tiz Midnight, tabbed at 8-1 on the morning line for trainer Bob Baffert. The four-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute will have Victor Espinoza aboard as she makes her stakes debut after winning her last three starts. She is switching back to dirt after winning two races over Del Mar’s synthetic main track and broke her maiden at Santa Anita in June. Tiz Midnight will break from the rail in the field of six.
