The Kentucky Derby trail visits southern California on Saturday, December 11, 2021 for the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)! The most promising juveniles on the west coast will line up to go a mile and a sixteenth over the Los Alamitos dirt, and the stakes are high. The race offers a $300,000 purse, as well as Road to the Kentucky Derby points, 10-4-2-1 for the top four finishers.

Though only Real Quiet (1997) has gone on from this race to win the Kentucky Derby, other great horses have won the race. Those include Belmont Stakes winners Point Given (2000) and A. P. Indy (1991), juvenile champion Shared Belief (2013), and modern super-sire Into Mischief (2007).

Read on to find out who will add his name to this illustrious list this year!

Now that you know how to find the best places to play the race, let’s get to know the best horses in the 2021 Los Alamitos Futurity

Los Alamitos Futurity Favorites

#3 Messier and #4 Barossa are the likely favorites in the Los Alamitos Futurity. They are both trained by Bob Baffert, who has won this race all seven years that it has been contested at Los Alamitos. He has also won the race six other times, back when it was run at Hollywood Park.

With the assignment of rider Flavien Prat, Messier is the likely favorite. Prat has a rapport with this horse, as he rode Messier to his maiden win at Santa Anita as well as his win in the Bob Hope (G3). Stretching out and adding blinkers Messier will likely be forward. However, it is his first time trying a two-turn trip, so he may cede some fitness and experience to his foes.

Those foes include stablemate Barossa. Under his regular rider Juan Hernandez, who has had a sharp start to the Los Alamitos meet, Barossa has already won a race going a mile. He stretched out to this trip for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), and though he was well beaten, that was a far tougher field. Barossa has tactical speed, and may have a fitness advantage as well.

The Rest of the Field

The better of trainer Doug O’Neill’s pair is #2 Durante. This horse will likely make the pace, a positive in a field of just five, and also good given how well speed held the first weekend of the Los Alamitos meet. Though it took Durante three attempts to win his first race, the stretch out to two turns has moved him forward. He also keeps rider Umberto Rispoli in the irons.

#5 Slow Down Andy is the other O’Neill entrant. The outside gate could give him a clean trip, and the stretch out from a sprint means he may not be too far off the pace early. But, this one has class to prove, as both of his starts have come against California-breds. He also has to show his ability first time at two turns.

#1 Olympic Legend completes the group. Trained by Luis Mendez, he tries two turns for the first time. Though his sire Street Boss is a strong one-turn influence, his dam has produced two two-turn winners. The biggest thing Olympic Legend must prove is that he has kept up with his class, as his maiden win came early in the year and his next two starts have disappointed.

Los Alamitos Futurity Bets

Though several of these runners have a chance, Barossa is the most interesting of the field. Juan Hernandez is a strong rider who still often does not get bet the way he should, and with significant two-turn experience and the class drop, he has proven the most. It also helps that his barn has such a winning history in this race; he should be ready to return to his top form.

Here are the best bets for the 2021 Los Alamitos Futurity:

  • $20 to win - #4 Barossa

  • $1 exacta - #4 Barossa over #2 Durante

  • $0.50 trifecta key - #4 Barossa over #2 Durante and #3 Messier
